Knowledge
Management Knowledge
management (KM) is one of the fastest growing areas of information technology.
This white paper explains key concepts and benefits of knowledge
management (KM). To
the extent, nearly all organizations depend on knowledge to flourish. KM is needed nearly everywhere and is the latest
stage in the evolution of information technology. The first stage began
with computers solving rudimentary problems such as arithmetic much more
quickly and accurately than humanly possible. Next, databases allowed
storage of massive amounts of data and offered quick retrieval. Much of
the latest progress in information technology is knowledge management.
Knowledge
must be thought of as a refined form of information. In many cases, computers
can’t create the knowledge for us; human analysts are still required.
However, computers can play a pivotal role by serving as the repository
for knowledge and by providing tools to facilitate rapid analysis. Figure
1 shows a hierarchy of data, with knowledge at the top of the pyramid.
